The College of Science (CS) is the country’s premier generator of new scientific knowledge and its leading producer of PhD and MS graduates in the basic and applied sciences and mathematics. The College operates the National Science Complex that was established by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in her issuance of Executive Order No. 583 on 8 December 2006.

The mission of CS is to generate new scientific knowledge that improves the accuracy of our understanding of how Nature works (scientific research), and to guide and supervise the next generations of scientists and researchers of the country (mentoring).

The CS was set up as a separate college of University of the Philippines Diliman on 6 October 1983 during the term of Senator Edgardo Angara as UP President. The following faculty members served as CS Dean: Dr Roger Posadas (October 1983 – October 1993), Dr Danilo Yanga (November 1993 – May 2000), Dr Rhodora Azanza (June 2000 – May 2006) and Dr Caesar Saloma (June 2006 – present). The CS Dean is appointed to a term of three years and may be re-appointed for another term by the UP Board of Regents. National Science Complex

At present, it is composed of eleven constituent units namely; National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS), National Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (NIMBB), The Marine Science Institute (MSI), National Institute of Physics (NIP), Natural Sciences Research Institute (NSRI), Institute of Biology (IB), Institute of Chemistry (IC), Institute of Environmental Science & Meteorology (IESM), Institute of Mathematics (IM), Materials Science & Engineering Program (MSEP), and Science & Society Program (SSP).

The College produces an average of 13.04 PhD, 46.52 MS and 236.2 BS graduates per academic year and enrolls an average of 144.9 PhD, 449.8 MS and 1401.3 BS students per semester. In the 2nd semester of SY 2008-2009, the College employed 147 PhD faculty members in its various constituent units.

The National Science Complex is located in the southeast portion of UP Diliman. It is currently being completed at a total cost of Php 1.7B using funds that have been provided by the national government in FY 2006, 2008 and 2009. Construction started in March 2007 with the final building to be completed in January 2012.

National Science Complex. The College ocucpies a 21.9 hectare area in the south sector of UP Diliman that is adjacent to the UP Technology Incubation Park. On 8 December 2006, the area was decalred as the National Science Complex by President Macapagal-Arroyo by an executive order (EO 583).

Governance. The Dean is the chief executive officer of the College with a three-year term of office. He/she is assisted by three Associate Deans (Academic Affairs, Student & Public Affairs, Resources & Facilities or Research & Extension), and the College Secretary.

Each constituent institute/department is managed by a Director/Chairperson who is appointed by the University to a three-year term of office. The Dean, Directors, Chairpersons, Program Coordinators and the Associate Deans form the College Executive Board which us tasked with the effecitve implementation of University policies and guidelines in the College.

Constituent Units. The following academic units comprise the College of Science: National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS), The Marine Science Institute (MSI), National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnoloy (NIMBB), Institute of Biology (IB), Institute of Chemistry (IC), Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (IESM), Department of Mathematics (DM), Natioanl Institute of Physics (NIP), Natural Sciences Research Institute (NSRI), Materials Science and Engineering Program (MSEP), and the Science and Society Program (SSP).

NIGS, MSI, NIMBB, NIP and NSRI are national institutes with directors selected through a process that is nationwide scope. Since 1998, NIGS, MSI, IB, IC, NIP and DM have been declared as centers of execllence (COE) by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). In 2006, they were renewed as COEs,along wiht NIMBB.

The Science and Society Program (SSP) is a non-degree granting unit which administers three courses under the UP Diliman's Revitalized General Education Program, including Science, Technology and Society (STS). The regular affiliate faculty of SSP is joined by an interdisciplinary team of faculty from the College of Science, the College of Engineering and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.

Undergraduate. The College offers five (5) 4-year BS degree programs -- Biology (IB), Chemistry (IC), Mathematics (DM), Geology (NIGS), and Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB) -- and two (2) 5-year BS degree programs -- Physics (NIP) and Applied Physics (NIP).

Master of Science Degree Programs. The College offers the following MS degreee programs: Biology (IB), Microbiology (IB), Chemistry (IC), mathematics (DM), Applied Mathematics (DM), Marine Science (MSI), Geology (NIGS), Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB), Physics (NIP), Meteorology (IESM), Environmental Science (IESM), Materials Science and Engineering (MSEP), and Chemical Education (IC).

The College also offers a Professional Master's in Applied Mathematics (Actuarial Science) (DM) and Master of Arts degrees in Mathematics (DM) and Physics (NIP).

Doctor of Philosophy Degree Programs. The College offers the following PhD degree programs: PhD Biology (IB), PhD Chemistry (IC), PhD Mathematics (DM), PhD Marine Science (MSI), PhD Geology (NIGS), PhD Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB), PhD Physics (NIP), PhD Meteorology (ISEM), PhD Environmental Science (IESM), and PhD Materials Science and Engineering (MSEP).

Support Facilities. The College operates a library at teh College of Science (CS) Administration and Library Building that is open from Mondays to Saturdays (8am - 6pm). The College also operates the Computational Science Research Center (CSRC) to serve the computing and communications.

Scholarships. The College is a major partner of the Science Education Institute of the Department of Science and Technology inthe training of BS students in the basic sciences and mathematics. During the first semester of SY2006-2007, about four hundred DOST-SEI scholars were enrolled in the College. The College is also a vital partner of hte Philippine Council for Advanced Science and Technology Research and Development of DOST in the training of MS and PhD students. Graduate scholarships are also provided by CHED. Full/partial scholarships are also available from private individuals and organizations.
