Welcome to the Institute of Chemistry PDF Print E-mail

Welcome!  The IC is one of six degree-granting units of the UP College of Science andis designated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as a center of excellence in chemistry.

The IC started as the Department of Chemistry in 1910 and was eventually reorganized as an Institute in 1987.  Today it is recognized as a leading institution of learning and research in chemistry in the Philippines.

With the completion of  two new buildings within the Science Complex, the IC continues its commitment to education, research, and extension services and in producing the finest graduates in chemistry.

All chemistry lecture and laboratory classes have been conducted in the new IC Teaching Bldg (at the UPD Science Complex, Diliman Quezon City) since June 2012. The Chemistry research building, which is directly across the teaching building, houses the different laboratories of the research faculty, the Analytical Services Lab (ASL), the ANSER (Advanced Nanomaterials, Sensor and Environmental Research Facility and the UP-Diliman NMR Facility).

Annual Chemistry Workshop for Public High School Students Launched

by Ralph Gonzales
 Kapnayan

Over 100 public high school
students participated in the first ever Project Kapnayan chemistry workshop
last 26th and 27th of November at Krus na Ligas High School in Quezon City. A
brainchild of the junior faculty of the Institute of Chemistry of the
University of the Philippines (UP IChem), Diliman, Project Kapnayan aimed to
expose and promote the field of chemistry to public high school students. The selected
group of public high school students went through a two-day workshop consisted
of talks, laboratory experiments and chemistry-related activities.

The project was launched last November 14 through a benefit concert entitled Stereochem: A Benefit Concert for Project Kapnayan at 70’s Bistro in Anonas, Quezon City. The concert, which featured bands such as Tanya Markova, Mayonnaise, and Stonefree, among others, was able to raise funds to help kickstart the high school chemistry workshop.

The series of talks and laboratory experiments aimed to facilitate concept development and promote appreciation of chemistry and its links to scientific experimentation, livelihood, health and nutrition, and environment preservation. Guest speakers from the UP Health Service, UP IChem, National Bureau of Investigation and Environmental Management Bureau provided insightful talks particularly focusing on these topics. The members of the junior faculty of UP Institute of Chemistry prepared and facilitated simple experiments related to the topics, which the participants performed.

Ensuring that the first ever Project Kapnayan workshop would be a success, Councilor Vincent Belmonte of the fourth district of Quezon City provided assistance and support all throughout the event.

Due to the overwhelming success of
the project, IChem ensures that Project Kapnayan 2012 would not be the first
and the last chemistry workshop. In fact, the Institute aims to bring Project
Kapnayan to more public high schools in the country.
