The IC is one of six degree-granting units of the UP College of Science and is designated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as a center of excellence in chemistry. The IC started as the Department of Chemistry in 1910 and was eventually reorganized as an Institute in 1987. Today it is recognized as a leading institution of learning and research in chemistry in the country. With the completion of two new buildings within the Science Complex, the IC continues its commitment to education, research, and extension services and in producing the finest graduates in chemistry. Prof. Florian del Mundo is the new IC head, replacing Dr. Irene Villasenor as Director. Dr. del Mundo obtained her PhD in Chemistry from La Trobe University in Australia and her MS and BS Chemistry degrees from UP Diliman. Her 3-year term started 02 July 2008. A lunch and a brief turnover ceremony are set on 04 August 2008 at the Pilar Herrera Hall at 12 noon.

Amidst the busy life at the IC, we were asked by Prof. X (name withheld on request) to join him at the College of Science Tree Planting ceremony, part of the partnership between UP Diliman and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The venture aims to plant 500 saplings of indigenous trees along the National Science Complex. |
